From Your First Record to a Chart Review

Most trading tools make you do the work: export CSVs, map columns, copy-paste fills, update prices by hand. Pro Trading Journal is built around one clean flow — sign in, connect, sync, and your trading life appears on screen. Here's exactly what happens at every step.

Step 1: Sign In

Hit Start Free and sign in with Google or email. No credit card. The Starter plan includes 50 new trades every calendar month with no expiry — enough to build a real review habit.

You land on the dashboard and can log a trade, import a PTJ-compatible CSV, or connect a supported spot exchange. Starter includes basic P&L and win rate; equity analytics, the calendar heatmap and premium psychology require Pro.

Step 2: Start With a Record; Set Goals Later

Account capital and a goal are optional settings you can add after logging your first trade:

• Trading capital — the money actually in your exchange accounts, not your net worth. This anchors your equity curve and risk math.
• Your goal — a target with a timeframe. The compounding ring on your dashboard tracks progress toward it with every synced trade.

A goal is a planning input, not an expected return. Follow the first-trade setup guide before adding more settings.

Step 3: Connect Your Exchange — Read-Only, Encrypted

Open the portfolio section and pick a supported exchange. Starter connects 1 spot exchange with manual sync; Pro adds automatic connections across 10 exchanges and supported futures views:

Binance, Bybit, OKX, Coinbase, Kraken, KuCoin, Bitget, Gate.io, HTX, and Crypto.com.

For each one, the connect dialog walks you through creating an API key on the exchange's side. Two security properties are non-negotiable:

• Read-only keys. You grant permission to view balances and trade history — never to trade, never to withdraw. Verify the venue-specific permission scopes and keep credentials secure. The setup guide shows you exactly which boxes to leave unchecked.
• AES-256-GCM encryption. Your key is encrypted with authenticated encryption before it's stored. It is never written down in plaintext, anywhere.

You can also set a sync-from date — useful if you want your journal to start from a clean slate ("only sync from January 1st onward") instead of importing years of ancient history.

Step 4: Sync — Your History Flows In

Hit sync. The engine pulls your trade history and current holdings from the exchange, normalizes them, and writes them into your journal. Every run is recorded in a sync history log — when it ran, what it found — so the process is never a black box.

Run a new sync to collect available history. The importer uses exchange identities to avoid duplicate fills; inspect the sync log if a record looks wrong.

Prefer manual? Manual trade entry works without an exchange connection. You can log PSX and US trades by hand alongside supported crypto exchange history.

Step 5: Everything Lights Up

Available data populates the relevant views after a successful sync. Features below have different plan boundaries:

• Portfolio tracker — your actual holdings with live prices, unrealized P&L updating in real time
• Trade journal — every fill becomes a journal entry with P&L, fees, and holding time
• Equity curve — your real performance over time, drawn from real data
• Metrics — win rate, expectancy, R-multiples, streaks, SQN
• Calendar heatmap — green and red days at a glance
• Badges — milestone tracking kicks in automatically

Starter covers its manual spot connection and basic review. Pro unlocks automation, equity analytics, calendar heatmaps, badges and premium intelligence. Imported fields and historical coverage vary by exchange.

Step 6: Your Trades, On the Chart

Here's where the flow completes.

The coins you hold become pinned favorites in the navbar — one click from any page to that symbol's chart. Open one, and the chart isn't generic anymore:

• Your position and cost basis are drawn on the symbols you hold
• Your journaled trades render as entry and exit markers on the exact candles
• Stop-loss and take-profit lines show your planned risk vs what happened
• The draggable Trade Dashboard summarizes the position while you study the structure

On Pro, flip on any of the three built-in algo engines — SMC for institutional structure, Pro for trend-line geometry and tested strategies, PTJ Signals & Overlays for the trend suite — and review your trade against what the chart was objectively saying at the time.

Step 7: The Loop That Makes You Better
