From Sign-In to Chart: How Pro Trading Journal Works (The Complete Flow)

The clean five-minute path through Pro Trading Journal — sign in, connect your exchange with read-only keys, sync your history, and watch your real trades appear on professional charts.

Five Minutes From Zero to Your Trades on a Live Chart

Most trading tools make you do the work: export CSVs, map columns, copy-paste fills, update prices by hand. Pro Trading Journal is built around one clean flow — sign in, connect, sync, and your trading life appears on screen. Here's exactly what happens at every step.

Sign in -> Connect exchange -> Sync history -> Portfolio & journal light up -> Your trades on the chart

Step 1: Sign In (30 Seconds)

Hit Start Free and sign in with Google or email. No credit card. The Starter plan includes 50 trades for your first 30 days — enough to find your first real pattern.

You land on the dashboard: equity curve, metrics, calendar heatmap, goals. Empty for now. Let's fix that.

Step 2: Set Your Capital & Goal

Two inputs that power everything downstream:

  • Trading capital — the money actually in your exchange accounts, not your net worth. This anchors your equity curve and risk math.
  • Your goal — a target with a timeframe. The compounding ring on your dashboard tracks progress toward it with every synced trade.

Be realistic here. A 10x over two to three years of consistent positive expectancy is a plan; a 100x by summer is a donation.

Step 3: Connect Your Exchange — Read-Only, Encrypted

Open the portfolio section and pick your exchange. Ten are supported:

Binance, Bybit, OKX, Coinbase, Kraken, KuCoin, Bitget, Gate.io, HTX, and Crypto.com.

For each one, the connect dialog walks you through creating an API key on the exchange's side. Two security properties are non-negotiable:

  • Read-only keys. You grant permission to view balances and trade history — never to trade, never to withdraw. Even if the key leaked, it cannot move funds. The setup guide shows you exactly which boxes to leave unchecked.
  • AES-256-GCM encryption. Your key is encrypted with military-grade authenticated encryption before it's stored. It is never written down in plaintext, anywhere.

You can also set a sync-from date — useful if you want your journal to start from a clean slate ("only sync from January 1st onward") instead of importing years of ancient history.

Step 4: Sync — Your History Flows In

Hit sync. The engine pulls your trade history and current holdings from the exchange, normalizes them, and writes them into your journal. Every run is recorded in a sync history log — when it ran, what it found — so the process is never a black box.

Re-sync anytime. New fills since the last run flow in; nothing duplicates.

Prefer manual? Everything also works without an exchange connection — manual trade entry is a first-class citizen. Many PSX and US traders journal manually while their crypto syncs automatically.

Step 5: Everything Lights Up

One sync, and the whole platform comes alive at once:

  • Portfolio tracker — your actual holdings with live prices, unrealized P&L updating in real time
  • Trade journal — every fill becomes a journal entry with P&L, fees, and holding time
  • Equity curve — your real performance over time, drawn from real data
  • Metrics — win rate, expectancy, R-multiples, streaks, SQN
  • Calendar heatmap — green and red days at a glance
  • Badges — milestone tracking kicks in automatically

This is the moment most new users have: "Oh. That's what my trading actually looks like." The data doesn't flatter, and that's the point.

Step 6: Your Trades, On the Chart

Here's where the flow completes.

The coins you hold become pinned favorites in the navbar — one click from any page to that symbol's chart. Open one, and the chart isn't generic anymore:

  • Your position and cost basis are drawn on the symbols you hold
  • Your journaled trades render as entry and exit markers on the exact candles
  • Stop-loss and take-profit lines show your planned risk vs what happened
  • The draggable Trade Dashboard summarizes the position while you study the structure

Flip on any of the three built-in algo engines — SMC for institutional structure, Pro for trend-line geometry and tested strategies, PTJ Signals & Overlays for the trend suite — and review your trade against what the chart was objectively saying at the time.

Step 7: The Loop That Makes You Better

Everything above exists to power one habit:

Plan trade -> Execute -> Journal -> Review on chart -> Find the mistake -> Improve next trade

The Psychology & Discipline Center closes the loop — pre-trade rituals before you enter, post-trade reflections after you exit, behavioral pattern detection across your whole history. The sync gives you truth; the review turns truth into improvement.

The Whole Flow, Once More

  • Sign in — Google, 30 seconds, free
  • Set capital & goal — anchor the math
  • Connect exchange — read-only key, AES-256-GCM encrypted, 10 exchanges supported
  • Sync — history and holdings flow in, logged transparently
  • Review — portfolio, journal, equity curve, metrics, all live
  • Open the chart — your trades on the candles, three algo engines on tap
  • Improve — journal, reflect, repeat

Five minutes of setup. Then the only thing left to work on is the only thing that ever mattered: your decisions.
